Tokay Pinot Gris would have been brought back from Hungary by Lazare de Schwendi, after his victory in Tokay over Turkish in 1565. However, no grape variety seems to look like it today in Hungary.
In the years 1970, Alsatians had as a practice to call it simply Tokay. In the middle of the 1980’s, upon an agreement with Hungarian, Alsatians reproduced on their labels Tokay Pinot Gris, instead of Tokay.
From April 2007, these labels will only have the Pinot Gris, the name of Tokay from now on being reserved exclusively to Hungarian grape variety.
